Common Cold Self-HelpCommon cold self-help is what I need right now.  Sore throat, coughing, sneezing, slight fever, aches, constantly tired…Man I’m miserable! This is the first “bad” cold I’ve had in about five years and, to me, it’s anything but common. I’ve had the sniffles and felt miserable for a couple of days from time to time but this will be a solid week tomorrow and I’m just not getting better. Yes, I know where I got it and I blame the gentleman setting behind us in church on February 11th.  He coughed all over my husband and I without attempting to cover his mouth.  Wish I knew his name, I’d return the favor. A mean thought, I know, but very tempting.

I started with this mess last Tuesday, February 14th.  Happy Valentines Day.  I couldn’t even go out for dinner that night.  I didn’t really miss going out but that isn’t the point now is it. I know, I’m whining and that’s something I don’t usually allow myself to do.

Not only do I feel rotten because of the common cold my fibromyalgia is exacerbated by it.  My muscles and skin hurt to be touched.  I’m taking the maximum pain medication I can have and it’s not even touching the pain.  My heating pad and massagers are my best friends right now and they don’t produce long-lasting results.  I know I should be more active than I am right now but I feel too miserable to put the effort into it.  I tried that some over the weekend and now I’m worse than I was on Friday.

I also know I’m eating all wrong for my fibromyalgia. I’ve consumed more carbohydrates in the past five days than I have in the past three months and my body is letting me know about it.  It’s really easy to grab a piece of toast and peanut butter instead of making soup or a salad when I feel this bad.  I know that’s the worst thing I can do but carbohydrates are also what my body wants right now.  Kind of a catch 22.  I’m going to have to MAKE myself eat better or I won’t quit aching even after the cold is gone.  I know that, I know that, I know that – Now DO it! I do a good job of chastising myself don’t I.

Some common cold self-help tips I’ve been using are essential oils of eucalyptus, peppermint, tea tree, and grapefruit to ward off some of the symptoms.  At least that way I can breathe a little easier.  These oils not only open up the airways they act as a disinfectant to kill the cold germs.  The peppermint and eucalyptus oils also help with the muscle aches – at least to a point they do. It’s about time to go apply some more oils to my shoulders and my sinuses.

Other common cold self-help tips include drinking lots of fluids  and I need to drink more water.  Also getting enough rest is very important as we all know.  I don’t think I’m getting enough rest either.  When I’m done writing this I’m going to go take a nap.

I hate taking cold medications.  For the most part they leave me dopier than I already am but I do take something at night so I can sleep.  Just because I’m tired from the cold doesn’t mean the cough won’t keep me awake.  There aren’t many things more aggravating than coughing all night long so I try to head that off if at all possible. I’m going to have to follow my common cold self-help tips and use the cold medications to beat this thing.
