First you have to have the proper diagnosis so you go to the doctor because you’ve been suffering with all over body pain, problems with memory, insomnia, agitation burning under your skin, digestive problems and a host of other symptoms that your physician can’t pinpoint a disease for.  After some extensive testing and sometimes erroneous diagnosis it is determined that you have fibromyalgia.  Great, no cure, but it won’t kill you and it is going to make your life miserable.

There are several ways of coping with fibromyalgia.  There are medications that you can take to help with the pain and insomnia.  Getting the proper amount of rest is paramount in dealing with fibromyalgia. Without that not much else will be effective.  To combat the mental fog keep your brain active.  Read, write a diary, take up writing articles for a web site or magazine, or do puzzles. Reduce your stress level.  Switch to part time work if you can, give up on some of your club activities, don’t worry so much about house work, cooking and the like. These are all easier said than done but it can be accomplished. Get plenty of daylight.  Go outside for breaks, keep the curtains open, only occasionally go to a tanning salon to be surrounded by warmth and light.  If you work on a computer have a bright light in the room to counteract the flickering of the monitor.

The list of coping mechanisms goes on.  If you can, rest for 10 – 30 minutes after lunch to recharge.  Alternate cold and heat to relieve pain, stiffness and soreness.  Exercise is important to stay limber and detoxify your cells.  A short walk or some gentle yoga is definitely in order.  Just be sure not to do it to the point of making the pain worse.  Fibromyalgia often strikes the back, shoulders and neck.  Finding exercises that stretch these muscles will help the pain immensely. There are other helpful hints you can find on line so take advantage of the search engines and find what will work for you.
